Process for surface treating a weakly loaded machine element (4, 5) comprises mechanically working the workpiece and coating the contact zones with a nickel layer (11) having embedded particles of an oscillating damping non-metal. Preferably the nickel layer is chemically applied. Plastic particles are mixed with the starting material forming the nickel layer. A nickel-phosphorus layer with a thickness of 10-50 microns is applied. The plastic particles have a diameter of up to 5 microns. The nickel-phosphorus layer contains 4-10 wt.% phosphorus. The coating is carried out in a bath containing nickel sulfate or nickel chloride, cobalt sulfate or cobalt chloride, iron sulfate or iron chloride and a reducing agent.
