PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vacuum cleaner having a means for optically detecting the presence or absence of dust, which has component parts with improved durability. SOLUTION: The vacuum cleaner includes a dust collecting chamber 8 for collecting dust, the vacuum cleaner body 1 having a suction hole 9 communicating with the dust collecting chamber 8, and a connecting pipe 14 connected to the suction hole 9 one end of which communicates with the dust collecting chamber 8, is provided with means (12, 13) for optically detecting the presence or absence of dust in the vicinity of the suction hole 9, the connecting pipe 14 is composed of a transparent member through which the light quantity of the optically detecting means (12, 13) can permeate, and therefore the vacuum cleaner having the means for optically detecting the presence or absence of dust with an improved durability can be provided.
