Process for the controlled operation of a combustion engine comprises monitoring and evaluating the progress of the combustion by measuring relevant parameters selected from start of combustion, combustion duration and combustion rate, and controlling the parameters for subsequent combustion. The turbulence level is changed in the combustion chamber to regulate combustion and the level is raised from a short time to stabilize the combustion. Preferred Features: The turbulence level is changed by shifting the overlap between the outlet valve opening and the inlet valve opening. The progress of the combustion is monitored using a real time cylinder pressure evaluation unit.
