METHOD FOR PRODUCING AND TRANSFORMING PROTOPLAST OR CASSAVA

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a protoplast of cassava or its closely related species that is transformed to regenerate a plant, and to obtain starch having increased amylopectin content. SOLUTION: This method for producing the protoplast comprises the production of a frail germ-forming callus from explants of the cassava or its closely related species and the isolation of the protoplast from the frail germ-forming callus. Also, the protoplast obtained from the method is provided. Further, the method for transforming the cassava and its closely related species and the transformed protoplast obtained from the method are provided. In addition, the method for regenerating a plant body from the protoplast and the plant body of the cassava or its closely related species obtained by the method are provided. The starch isolated from the tuber of such cassava plant body contains increased amylopectin content. The starch and the method for isolating the starch from the plant body form the parts of the present invention.
