The invention concerns a method for limiting the interpretation of the identity of an entity. According to the invention, one or more digital certificates are defined for the public key of the entity; a digital certificate of the entity or data indicating the digital certificate to be used is added to a digital document generated by the entity; the digital document is signed digitally, said digital document comprising at least the digital certificate of the entity or data indicating the digital certificate to be used; and the entity is verified by the aid of the digital certificate indicated by the digitally signed digital document.
