A heat exchanger is formed of two plates or stages (4and 6), the stage (4) being on top of the stage (6) and a plurality of such heat exchangers being stacked one on another. The stage (4) has an inlet opening (14), an in- let passage (28) and passages (22) being open at the end (26) of the stage.The stage (6) has an inlet opening (36) leading to passages (52) leading to an outlet passage (58) and outlet opening (40).The stage (6) also has an inlet opening (38) leading to passages (64) having an outlet at end (68).Combustible gas, for ex- ample material gas and an oxidant enter pas- sage region (30) of stage (4) where the mixture is pre-heated and then passes to passage region (32) of stage (4).Those portions of the gas passages (22) in passage region (32) contain a combustion promoting catalyst so that the combustible gas and oxidant mixture bum in the passage region (32).The products of com- bustion leave through outlet end (26) and are conveyed to inlet (38) of passage region (46) of stage (6} comprising passages (64).Heat from the passage region (46) pre-heats further combustible gas and oxidant entering the pas- sage region (30).Fluid entering the passage region (44) through the inlet (36) extracts heat of combustion from the passage region (32); the fluid may either undergo an endothermic reaction in the passage region (44) or acquire sensible heat. In either case the resultant products) leave the passage regi on (44) through the outlet (40).
