A three dimensional plug flow bioreactor, and its use for the maintenance and expansion of undifferentiated hemopoietic stem or progenitor cells, whereby said cells are seeded into said stationary phase bioreactor in which a three dimensional stromal cell culture has been pre- established on a substrate in the form of a sheet, and thereby maintaining/expanding the undifferentiated hemopoietic stem or progenitor cells.
