PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a breather device for an engine with a breather chamber in a head cover for improving the gas-liquid separating function without increasing the size of the head cover. SOLUTION: The breather device for the engine has the head cover 36 joined to a cylinder head 8 for defining a valve system 21b in a space thereto and, the breather chamber 69 formed therein for gas-liquid separation of a blow-by gas containing oil introduced from the valve system 21b for returning the oil to an oil reservoir 40 and guiding the blow-by gas to the outside. There is provided a pre-breather chamber 69' arranged in the valve system 21b at the lower part of the breather chamber 69 for communicating with the breather chamber 69 and the valve system 21b via first and second communication holes 71a, 71b, respectively.
