A substituted 2-phenylpyridine of the formula (I), wherein: n is zero or 1, R1 is aminosulfonyl, C1-6alkylsulfinyl, C1-6alkylsulfonyl or C1-6haloalkylsulfonyl, R2, R3 independently are hydrogen or halogen, R4 is cyano, hydroxyl, halogen, C1-6alkoxy or phenylmethoxy, wherein the phenyl ring may be unsubstituted or may carry from one to three substituents, in each case selected from the group consisting of hydroxyl, halogen, C1-6alkyl, C1- 6haloalkyl, C1-6alkoxy, C1-6haloalkoxy, hydroxycarbonyl, (C1-6alkoxy)carbonyl and (C1-6alkoxy)carbonyl-C1-6alkoxy, R5 is hydrogen, nitro, cyano, hydroxylamino, halogen, C1- 6alkyl, C1-6haloalkyl, -COCl, -COOR6, -CO-N(R7)R8, -CO-O- (C1-4alkylene)-CO-OR6, -CO-O-(C1-4alkylene)-CO-N(R7)R8, X1- (C1-4alkylene)-CO-R6, -X1-(C1-4alkylene)-CO-OR6, X1(C14alkylene)COO(C14alkylene)CO-OR6, -X1-(C1-4alkylene)- CO-N(R7)R8, -X1-R9, CH=C(R10)-CO-OR6, -CH=C(R10)-CO-O-(C1- 4alkylene)-CO-OR6, -CH=C(R10)-CO-N(R7)R8, formyl, -CO-R6, - C(R8)=N-OR15, -X1-(C1-4alkylene)-C(R8)=N-OR15, CH=C(R10)C(R8)=NOR15, -CH(C1-6alkoxy)2, -N(R16)R17, -N(R16)- SO2-(C1-6alkyl), N(R16)CO-(C1-6alkyl), chlorosulfonyl, hydroxysulfonyl or -SO2-N(R18)R19, a group of formula (II) or formula (III), and X1-X3 independently of one another are oxygen or sulfur. Also described is the use of the compounds of formula (I) and the agriculturally useful salts thereof, as herbicides or for the desiccation and/or defoliation of plants.
