The exhaust silencer (1) comprises an outer casing (2) and a flow pipe (6) which extends from one end (3) of the casing to the opposite end (4). The flow pipe has closed pipe wall and a number of diverging chambers (10) which are located one behind the other in the direction (7) of exhaust gas flow, and the radial dimensions of which are greater than the normal diameter (11) of the flow pipe. The diverging chambers are located co-axially with the flow pipe. The diverging chambers may be annular cylindrical chambers with the same outside diameter.
