Data is recorded/reproduced on/from a magnetic tape through a network. A monitoring section (15) always monitors the data stored in a temporary storage section (14). A first control section (13) controls the data transfer between a tape−like magnetic recording medium (11) and the temporary storage section (14) according to the result a of the monitoring. A second control section (16) controls the information transfer between the temporary storage section (14) and a network (21). The first and second control sections (13, 16) do not interfere with each other and independently and asynchronously operate. With this asynchronous construction, data can be communicated with another apparatus asynchronously through an interface section (17) and the network (21). The inventions can be applied to a digital VTR.
