The invention concerns the use, as buffer dispersant of compositions and bases for aqueous paints and paint-like pigment compositions in aqueous phase, of the combination of a partly or completely neutralized water-soluble dispersant homopolymer of acrylic or methacrylic acid with at least another ethylenically unsaturated monomer, alone or mixed, with a compound having specific buffer properties. The invention also concerns the buffer dispersants and the compositions and bases for aqueous paints and paint-like pigment compositions in aqueous phase containing said dispersants.
