Polyalkylene polysulphides

Polyalkylene polysulfides, comprising chains of the formula I R and R' are identical or different and are hydrogen or alkyl having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms or COR'', where R'' is hydrogen or alkyl having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, x is a number whose average is from 2 to 20, and n is a number>10. A process is moreover disclosed for preparing polyalkylene polysulfides by reacting at least one carbonyl compound of the formula II R and R' are as defined above, with sulfur and hydrogen sulfide in the presence of a basic catalyst.
