A blast attenuating, directing and extinguishing apparatus 1, such as an anti terrorist litter bin, comprises a primary container 2 housed within a secondary container 3 defining there-between, a cavity containing an extinguishing fluid such as water. Means, such as weakened / thinned portions or membranes 10, or holes (fig.6), in an upper wall 4, may encourage fluid displaced by internal pressure, such as might be caused by an internal explosion in the primary container, into being expelled in a generally vertically direction, or at an angle into any vertical blast plume from within the bin. Thus, a portion of the explosion energy that might normally extend horizontally / radially in a more dangerous manor, can be redirected last harmful, generally vertical direction and an instantaneous attempt to extinguish the plume can be made. The bin 1 may be generally spherical in form, on a base 12. A second embodiment adds vertical energy dissipation tubes (13, fig.2) to the above structure. A third embodiment has energy dissipation tubes (14, fig.3) which curve and meet towards a top portion and may further feature apertures (15, fig.3) allowing any displaced fluid to rain down into the primary container 2. |
