[Also in Groups XXXIII and XXXIV] A body which may fall into land or water, e.g. an aircraft or guided missile or a major part thereof, has salvage gear comprising inflatable pneumatic cushions arranged so as to strike the land or water before the body, at least one cushion being designed to burst or be deflated on impact, and at least one cushion being designed not to burst on impact to constitute a float or resilient support. Fig. 2 shows the underneath of a delta-winged target aircraft 10 provided with three forward inflated bags 13a, 14a, 15a, and three rearward inflated bags 13B, 14B, 15B, each bag being cylindrical with hemispherical ends. Fig. 3 is a cross section of the of the aircraft and forward bags, which when deflated are housed in recesses 16 in the aircraft, and faired in by fairings 17 attached to the bags. Cables 31 surrounding the bags are anchored to the aircraft at 32. Each side bag 13A, 15A is diametrically divided by an airtight diaphragm 19 and further divided by an airtight diaphragm 21 into a compartment 20 and two compartments 22. The central bag 14a is divided by a permeable diaphragm 18 controlling distortion of the bag. The bag 17 and compartments 20 are provided with weakened wall areas 23, 24. When the fuel of the target is exhausted, or on receiving a radio signal, a parachute is deployed and the bags are inflated from a source 26 controlled by the parachute deploying means or by the deployment of the parachute. Latches fastening the fairings 17 are also unlocked. On striking land or water, the bags are compressed, and the wall areas 23, 24 are designed to burst when the kinetic energy of fall has just been absorbed, preventing rebound. The compartments 22 remain inflated, supporting the aircraft on land or water. The wall areas 23, 24 may be replaced by valves. |
