The limits of acceptable values (RG) of the fault value, e.g. diameter ( phi ), are set by deciding on a single pair of points (P+,P-) on a pair of curves relating fault value against fault length (L). The curves can be selected from available sets of characteristic curves of different shape. The curves can be scaled, compressed or expanded along one of the axes directions, or inclined at an angle. In addition to the fault diameter ( phi ), other fault properties, e.g. hairiness, color deviation, can be treated in the same manner.
