The present invention relates to the amino acid and deduced nucleic acid sequence of synthetic E2 proteins comprising a consensus sequence of the mos t conserved amino acids found in E2 of 77 different HCV 1b isolates worldwide. The invention further relates to a truncated version of the E2 protein lacki ng HVR1. Another aspect of the present invention concerns a vaccine comprising the E2 proteins.
