PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition which gives a high order parameter. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition contains a compound represented by general formula (1). In the formula, D<1> is a basic nucleus, L<1> is a conjugated chain, m is 0 or 1, and A<1> is an acidic nucleus, provided that at least one of D<1> , L<1> and A<1> has a substituent represented by the formula: -[(B<1> )p -(Q<1> )q -(B<2> )r ]n - C<1> [wherein B<1> and B<2> are each a divalent aryl group, a heterocyclic aryl group or an alicyclic hydrocarbon group; Q<1> is a divalent binding group; C<1> is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkoxy, alkoxycarbonyl or acyloxy; and p, q and r are each an integer of 0 to 5, and n is an integer of 1 to 3, provided that (p+r)×n is 3 to 10].
