PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make fine adjustment of a sealing material application quantity possible in the formation of a sealing pattern for sticking substrates wherein reduction of the application quantity is desired. SOLUTION: A sealing pattern for joining a pair of substrates to each other is applied by using a sealing dispenser which has a cylinder having a nozzle, an X-Y table for moving the substrates and a gap sensor. The gap sensor has a light emitting element and a light receiving element for judging the size of the gap between the substrate and the tip part of the nozzle corresponding to light quantity. The cylinder moves slightly in the direction Z perpendicular to the substrate so that the light quantity judged by the gap sensor is kept constant to adjust the sealing material application quantity corresponding to the varied gap.
