PURPOSE: A thermostat for opening and closing a valve of engine coolant is provided to lengthen a life span by decreasing internal pressure with reducing increase rate of elastic force of a spring against increase of opening degree. CONSTITUTION: A thermostat comprises a valve(11) shutting off coolant; a pallet(12) integrally formed with the valve; a wax body expanding and contracting according to temperature of coolant in the pallet; a spindle(13) opening the valve by pushing the pallet in expanding the wax body; a turning spring(17) fixed in a lower case(15) and the lower part of the pallet, and strained in opening the valve to accumulate elastic force and radiate for turning the pallet partially; a protrusion part(18) protruded spirally in the outer periphery of the pallet; and a guide groove(19) combined with the protrusion part of the pallet, and formed in the lower case to guide rotation in moving up and down the pallet. The internal pressure to the wax body is reduced, and endurance of the thermostat is improved with applying elastic force partially to rotational force of the pallet in opening the valve.
