PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize an image reader and to prevent a non-image at the sheet read position from being read as required without recognizing the size of original at book reading by placing a sheet read position to the inside of a book valid reading range. SOLUTION: In the image forming device where an image read position by an original carrying type is placed within a read available range at reading of an image by an original fixing type, a user can select a first maximum reading area corresponding to the entire read available range at image reading by the original fixing type or a second maximum reading area resulting eliminating an area of the image reading part by the original carrying type from the entire read available range. However, the user can automatically select the first maximum reading area when an automatic document feeder is not loaded or opened. Comparing the read area corresponding to an output image size (and a zoom magnification) with the selected maximum reading area selects a final reading area which is smaller between the both.
