PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader small in installation area, high in image quality and high in processing efficiency. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with contact glass placed nearly perpendicularly to an installed face of the image reader, a read means that reads an original fixed along the contact glass, and a white reference board used for shading correction. The white reference board and the contact glass are placed in the image reader in the lower order, and the image reader raises the read means to read the white reference board and the original in this order.
