PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for reading an image, an apparatus for forming an image, a communication device, and a method for detecting an abnormal portion in an image where it is possible to obtain the statistics of the amount and types of abnormal pixels in a state in which the reading device is used practically, obtained statistics are useful to study the causes of the abnormal pixels, and a proper counter plan can be provided for the abnormal pixels. SOLUTION: The device for reading an image comprises a reference white board which serves as a reference on a read line for reading a given document, a scanner 1 for detecting abnormal pixels by reading the white reference board, and an image memory 5 for storing image information formed by the abnormal pixels. The image memory 5 stores the data of the abnormal pixels obtained by the scanner 1 as statistical data 40 by the size of the abnormal pixel.
