PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent cost increase even when side plates configuring the housing of the image reader are formed by press working. SOLUTION: In the embodiment of this invention claimed in the claim 1, side plates 14, 15 placed nearly in parallel with a moving direction of an optical system are finished in common by press working among side plates configuring the housing 4 of the image reader 3. Further, in the embodiments described in the claims 2, 3, the optical system or a charge coupled device (CCD) is fitted to an upper face of the side plates and a particular common shape resulting from combining a perfect circle section 112 and a long hole section 114 is adopted for a positioning opening for placing a mount adjustment tool in order to provide commonality to the side plates above.
