PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent wasteful preliminary scanning from being conducted when a handy scanner is detached from a main body. SOLUTION: This system consists of an image reader, which has a image read sensor that can be detached from the image reader and independently read an image, an interface means that inputs/outputs the read image and a control signal or the like, a connection sensing means that sense whether or not the image read sensor is connected to the image reader and a paper feeder that can supply a paper original to the image read sensor, and an image processor which has an interface means that inputs/outputs the image and the control signal or the like to/from the image reader, an image input means that receives the image via the interface, a range designation means that browses the image having read in advance and references it to designate an image read range of the same original, a means for supervising the state of the image reader, and a read instruction means that instructs read start capable of designating the range by the supervisory means depending on the state of the image reader.
