Plant, yeast or fungal lipid extracts containing ergosterol are used in cosmetic compositions for enhancing the barrier function of the skin. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a shiitake extract with an ergosterol content of about 20 wt.%; (2) a cosmetic composition comprising the extract of (1).
