A method for determination of the origin of materials with biological, biochemical and nutritional physiological relevance and differentiation thereof from synthetic analogues is disclosed, making use of the relative positional relationships for oxygen and hydrogen isotopes (delta<18>O-value and delta<2>H-value), whereby - based on the fact that organic compounds have at least two different primary or secondary sources for said elements each with differing isotope values and that the inclusion of said elements is accompanied by differing but characteristic isotope effects the positional delta<18>O-values and delta<2>H-values are individually determined for the material under test an compared with the values expected from biosynthesis, whereby correspondence or deviation permits determination of the authenticity or origin of a material or the adulteration thereof. |
