To apply a paint to a surface, with an energy-initiated hardening, the paint application and the initiated hardening are effected within a short time span by a robot. The hardening action starts as soon as the paint arrives at the substrate surface, in alternating pulses or simultaneously. The paint has a sufficiently low viscosity for an even distribution. The paint is desensitized by encapsulation in micro-capsules or by lengthening the hardening time by an altered reaction to an energy initiated polymerization. The hardening is through ultra violet, infra red or electron beams.
