PURPOSE: A method for estimating a channel in a communication system is provided to apply an orthogonal function to generate an orthogonal code having a cycle dividing a spreading factor of a sub-channel, so as to eliminate the incorrectness of channel estimation caused by accepting different information bits of a pilot channel. CONSTITUTION: If power control transmission data are received(ST11), a power control bit of the received data is discriminated(ST12). If a power control bit value indicates '-1', a code C2 is transmitted(ST13). If the power control bit value indicates '1', a code C1 is transmitted(ST14). When the code C1 is received, the first N1 chips of a power control sub-channel is correlated with the C1(ST15), and a correlation value and a threshold are compared(ST16). If the correlation value is larger than the threshold, the transmission of '1' to the power control sub-channel is confirmed(ST17). Residual N0 to N1 chips excepting the confirmed power control sub-channel are un-patterned to the C1(ST18). If the correlation value is smaller than the threshold, the transmission of '-1' to the power control sub-channel is confirmed(ST19). And residual N0 to N1 chips excepting the confirmed power control sub-channel are un-patterned to the C2(ST20).
