PURPOSE: A solenoid operated valve assembly and a method of preventing residual magnetic latching thereof are provided to prevent latching of an armature relative to a pole member in the valve. CONSTITUTION: A solenoid operated valve assembly comprises a coil of electrically conductive material having a pole member(21) made of magnetically permeable material disposed at least partially therein; a valve body(2) having an inlet, an outlet, and a valve obturator movably disposed in the body, to control flow between the inlet and outlet with the solenoid mounted thereon; an armature made of powdered metal and disposed for movement within the coil, to have certain surfaces co-operating with corresponding surfaces on the pole member to form a working air gap therebetween; an annular rib(24) formed on one of the surfaces defining the air gap. The rib has the outer diameter not greater than about sixty percent of the largest dimension of the armature measured transversely to the direction of movement.
