The wheelchair comprises a drive system that includes two input members e.g. handles carried for oscillatory (e.g. slidable) movement on a frame e.g. frame arms of the wheelchair. A transmission, e.g. a cable 52 and gearing 60,70 mechanically interconnects each input member to a respective main ground- engaging wheel. The gearing comprises a ring gear 60 with a meshing gear 70 inside it and cooperating via an override clutch with a drive body 80 coupled to a wheel, thereby enabling a user of the wheelchair to propel it by applying effort to the input member. Independent movement of the two input members can be used to effect steering control of the wheelchair. The wheelchair preferably also has a braking system to resist movement of the main wheels, the system having shoes 84 associated with the drive body 80 in a hub removable from the wheel. The drive can replace or supplement the normal wheel-mounted hand ring drive. |
