Method for joining reinforced elastomeric sheet material

Joining together ends of a cord reinforced rubber strip, by compressing the strip ends to reduce cord density before overlapping the thinner ends A strip comprises a rubber matrix containing parallel cords (3) running transversely across the strip (1). The strip ends to be overlapped are plastically deformed in the plane of the material and are increased in length as a result. Deformation reduces the cord density in the overlapping area. In a variation of the process the deformation results in a length increase and material thickness reduction towards the cut end, again with a cord density reduction. An Independent claim is made for a material strip joined together by the claimed process.
