PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide austenitic stainless steel which can prevent the reduction of corrosion resistance in a weld zone caused by the formation of a Cr-depleted layer and can maintain excellent corrosion resistance even in the weld zone. SOLUTION: The austenitic stainless steel has a composition containing 13.0 to 20.0% Cr, 8.0 to 15.0% Ni, 0 to 5.0% Mo, <=0.04% C, 0.5 to 2.0% Mn and <=0.6% Si, and, if required, containing one or two metals selected from 0.1 to 4.0% Cu, 0.01 to 0.3% N, 0.1 to 2.0% Nb and 0.1 to 2.0% Ti, and in which the value of X defined by formula (1) is controlled to >=0.1 so that a weld solidified structure in which primary crystalγis crystallized out can be obtained: X=Ni+30C+0.50Mn-0.55Cr-0.55Mo-0.8Si (1).
