Method and device for winding steel bar

After cooling, the hot rolled bar is wound into a coil (9) in a rotating coiling basket of a rotary basket winder (10). The coil is stabilised and compacted during coiling and during lifting from the winder. For stabilising, the outer windings of the coil are compacted strip-like by being sprayed with a cooling fluid, during lifting from the winder. The coil is moved past spray nozzles (14) by the supporting coiling base (11). For compacting, the coil is pressed from below against radially inward moving compacting bolts (7).
