PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an aromatic polyester, by which the aromatic polyester having a high polymerization degree and a good quality can be produced without clogging the reaction system, even when a highly sublimable diol compound in which at least one of hydroxyl groups is directed bound to an alicyclic skeleton is used as a raw material. SOLUTION: This method for producing the aromatic polyester is characterized by acylating (B) a diol compound in which at least one of hydroxyl groups is directed bound to an alicyclic skeleton, with (C) a fatty acid anhydride in an amount of 1.0 to 1.5 times equivalent that of the hydroxyl groups of the diol compound, and then subjecting the acylation product to an ester interchange reaction with (A) an aromatic carboxylic acid.
