PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an anesthetization method for slaughtering small animals such as pigs, comprising stepwisely anesthetizing the small animals for a prescribed time especially in a carbon dioxide gas chamber, and to provide an animal-retaining device used for the anesthetization method. SOLUTION: This anesthetization method for slaughtering the small animals, comprising circulating a plurality of the animal-retaining devices to anesthetize the small animals in a gas chamber in which carbon gas is charged, and then taking out the anesthetized small animals from the exit of the gas chamber, is characterized by retaining the small animals in the animal-retaining devices, respectively, at the entrance of the gas chamber, sequentially once separating the carried small animal-retaining devices from a cable member, loading the separated animal-retaining devices on an animal-retaining device-receiving guide rail disposed in a zone having a small gas concentration for a prescribed time to preliminarily anesthetize the small animals, again automatically picking up the animal-retaining devices from the guide rail through the cable member, and then lowering the animal-retaining devices to a zone having a large gas concentration in the lower portion of the gas chamber to mainly anesthetize the small animals.
