PURPOSE: An automatic response recording and reproducing apparatus for a video phone is provided to offer a telephone response service with various functions embodied in a conventional automatic response telephone without increasing an additional cost. CONSTITUTION: A modem(10) transmits compressed A/V data through a POTS(Plain Old Telephone Service) or receives voice and image signals transmitted from an object. The first multiplexer(20) transmits an analog voice signal outputted from the modem(10) according to a selector control signal. The second multiplexer(30) determines a path according to a selector control signal, and outputs the voice signal outputted from the first multiplexer(20) to a handset(32), a speaker phone(34), or an external audio port(36). An ADC(Analog to Digital Converter)(40) converts the analog voice signal outputted from the second multiplexer(30) into a digital signal. An A/V compression chip(60) compresses and encodes voice signals outputted from the ADC(40) and the modem(10), and decompresses and decodes compressed voice data transmitted from the object. A DAC(Digital to Analog Converter)(50) converts a voice signal outputted from the A/V compression chip(60) into an analog signal, and transmits the analog signal to the first multiplexer(20).
