The invention concerns an installation for positioning side by side nuclear fuel assemblies (24) on a core plate (20) of a nuclear reactor, having a plurality of contiguous sites (23), comprising: a loading machine (1) equipped with a control carriage (5), a main telescopic mast (7, 8) fixed by its upper end to the control carriage (5), and provided at its lower end with a grab (9), for engaging a fuel assembly (24) to be positioned, and capable of being translated along a plane parallel to the core plate (20); a secondary telescopic mast (10) fixed parallel to the main mast (10); a tool for guiding (15) the leg (26) of the assemblies (24), attached to the lower end of the secondary mast (10). The lower of the secondary mast (10) includes means for moving the leg (26) of the assembly (24) while it is being positioned, while maintaining stationary said assembly head, that is in the absence of any translational movement in synchronism with the main mast (7, 8).
