A control circuit, for use in controlling an alternating supply voltage (Vs) used in lighting circuits. The circuit includes at least one transistor arranged to pass an alternating voltage (VL) to a load and signal generating means for generating a biasing signal (Vb) for the transistor resulting in a transistor voltage (Vmos). The leading edges of the biasing signal (Vb) positioned at a specific phase angle with respect to the zero crossings of the supply voltage (Vs). The circuit also includes means for controlling the biasing signal and for reducing the harmonic content of the biasing signal.
