PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic head capable of preventing the deterioration of an S/N ratio of a reproducing signal or a recording signal without damaging a magnetic tape. SOLUTION: The magnetic head 30 is provided with a magneto-resistance element 3002 and a guard member 3004 having the magneto-resistance element 3002 buried therein. A smooth sliding surface 3006 is constituted by the surface of the magneto-resistance element 3002 and the surface of the guard member 3004. Recording and/or reproducing is carried out for a magnetic tape 1 while the magnetic tape 1 is slide on the sliding surface 3006. The guard member 3004 is made of a monocrystal material or a polycrystal material where a large number of same kinds of monocrystals are collected in various directions. Since the guard member 3004 is made of a monocrystal or a polycrystal, its hardness or wear resistance is nearly uniform.
