Watermarked paper especially for thermal printing, has backing layer with print and transparent covering layer

A printed article, e.g. a banknote, is made from a backing layer (1) with print (4) on at least one side, and a transparent covering layer (3) stuck to the backing layer with adhesive (2) and allowing the print to show through. The backing layer can be of coated paper, and the covering layer of a thermal paper with the thermal surface uppermost. Motifs printed on the backing layer are on a colored background, giving the appearance of a watermark.
