PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method for a magnetic recording medium which can suppress sizes of magnetic particles constituting a column structure and variance in particle size. SOLUTION: The manufacturing method for the magnetic recording medium which has a process of forming a magnetic layer including columns of magnetic particles (Co particle) and nonmagnetic particles (CoO particle) separating the columns by depositing metal vapor on a nonmagnetic base is characterized by that the angle of incidence of the metal vapor is preferably at least 45 deg. and the filming rate of the magnetic layer is >=0.5μm/s and, preferably, >=1.0μm/s.
