PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize life extension and cost reduction of a line type thermal head. SOLUTION: The thermal head is efficiently used and the life extension and the cost reduction of the thermal head is realized since a resistive heating element of the thermal head is divided into a part to be used for receipt printing and another part to be used for journal printing and are used with approximately equivalent frequency by dividing a printing area of roll paper on which printing is performed by the line type thermal head into a receipt printing area and a journal printing area, performing normal printing of 24×24 dots in the receipt printing area (S4) when the receipt printing is selected (Y in S2) and performing reduction printing of 16×16 dots in the journal printing area (S6) when the journal printing is selected (N in S2) so that the number of printed lines to the respective printing areas approximately coincide.
