A flavonoid-containing sunscreen composition having UV absorbency at 282 nm in water contains at least one flavanone and at least one flavone, the flavanone providing 75 to 98% of the UV absorbency at 282 nm and the flavone providing 2 to 25% of the absorbency at 282 nm.
