The invention relates to a method and a furnace for the graphitization of carbon bodies for electrodes, said furnace comprising some metal sections (10) fastened between some electrically insulating support members (16) made up of refractory material and spaced apart from each other, resting on an electrically insulating stationary base platform (18), said support members being spaced apart from said platform and arranged adjacently parallel, with their apertures aligned so that the metal sections (10) form two parallel rows as two columns of carbon bodies (52) arranged end to end in each of the two rows of metal sections (10) of the furnace, each column being surrounded by a particulate thermal insulation medium contained within the internal surfaces of the U-shaped metal sections (10) and supported by said internal surfaces, said column being held in electrical contact with some power heads so that the electrical current flows in series through the carbon bodies (52), in order to convert them in graphite by heating, due to the Joule effect, the ellectrically insulated continuous metal sections (10) having the external side and bottom surfaces spaced apart from the base platform (18) and the closely laterally adjacent and opposed side surfaces separated by a vertical flue opened at its top and at its bottom and having a Venturi-type shape, with a bottom opening substantially wider than the top opening in order to make the air exposed to heat from the bottom surfaces of the metal sections (10) of the furnace pass upwardly through the flue with increased speed, from the bottom to the top, for cooling the adjacent metal surfaces (10) of the furnace, some water layer spraying nozzles (76) being also placed adjacent to the external surfaces of the sections (10) for providing the cooling thereof.
