A method, system and computer reabable-storage medium for generating an identification code from a fingerprint image exhibiting a plurality of features. The method includes establishing a reference point from the features, generating at least one metric from the reference point and at least one of the features and forming the identification code from the at least one metric. Changes in the temperature and humidity of a set of one or more fingers will result in minor variations of the exhibited features. However, through appropriate selection of a reference point and through the use of a quantization technique, the resultant metric is rendered invariant from one fingerprint image to the next, for the same finger set. This lowers the false rejection rate. Meanwhile, the metric will be sufficiently unique for a given set of features such that the probability of attributing the same metric to a different donor's finger set is also kept relatively low. |
