The method involves using a characteristic with discrete supporting points to determine a control duration from a desired injection quantity, determining control durations not on discrete points by interpolation using a virtual characteristic derived from the real one by a transformation dependent on changeover time/duration and computing a real control duration from the virtual one by a second transformation dependent on changeover time/duration. AN Independent claim is also included for the following: a common rail system with an arrangement for determining control duration of a magnetic valve.
