1. Use of a compound having the formula wherein R1 is hydrogen or -COCH3, and R2 is hydrogen or C1-2 alkyl, or a prodrug thereof for the preparation of pharmaceutical compositions useful in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. 2. Use according to claim 1, characterized in that the compound having the formula (I) is paracetamol. 3. Use according to claim 1, characterized in that the prodrug of paracetamol is proparacetamol, aminosalol or acetaminosalol or acetaminosalol glycine ester. 4. Use according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the disease is Alzheimer's disease. 5. A therapeutic method in which a patient suffering from a neurodegenerative disease is treated with a therapeutically useful quantity of a compound having the formula wherein R1 is hydrogen or -COCH3, and R2 is hydrogen or C1-2 alkyl, or a prodrug thereof. 6. A method according to claim 4, characterized in that the disease is Alzheimer's disease. 7. Use according to claims 4 or 5, characterized in that the compound having the formula (I) is paracetamol. 8. A method according to claim 4, wherein the treatment comprises daily administration of 0.01-200 mg/kg of a compound having the formula (I) or an equivalent quantity of a prodrug of paracetamol. 9. A method according to claims 4 to 6, wherein the treatment comprises daily administration of 10-100 mg/kg of paracetamol or an equivalent quantity of a prodrug thereof. 10. A method according to claim 8, wherein the treatment comprises daily administration of 15-75 mg/kg of paracetamol or an equivalent quantity of a prodrug thereof.
