A computerized document management system that manages and allows efficient viewing of attachment documents in groups of electronic mail messages is disclosed. According to one aspect of the system, a first program determines whether an electronic mail message sent and/or received via an electronic mail server is a task message. If so, task history information, including the main text of the electronic mail message, attribute information, and information about relations with other messages, is registered in a memory storage region. A second program then extracts attachment documents from the electronic mail message. A third program stores the attachment documents in the memory storage region. Attachment document management information, including attachment document filename, attachment document file size, electronic mail transmission date, sender name, and a pointer to the storage region of the attachment document, is stored in the memory storage region. When a search request is received from a client, a fourth program displays a list of attachment documents if the request is for viewing a list of attachment documents. Otherwise, a fifth program displays a list of task histories, a list of electronic mail messages, or the like depending on the content of the request.
