The friction resistance of a ship's hull as the ship passes through the water can be reduced by partly covering the hull with a thin layer of air or other gas. This is done by running gas channels through the hull to gas outlet jets. The gas can be supplied by means of negative pressure or by a compressor. The process can be applied to existing ships by retrofitting the channel system.
